Clash between tourists in Phuket ends in murder. An Australian tourist died from a head injury sustained in a fight with a Swedish/Turkish citizen during a road conflict in Phuket. The men were on scooters, and the altercation began when one signalled to the other. According to Bangkok Post, 58-year-old Australian Alan Roger Jolliffe died at Patong Hospital around 23:00 on February 25. The man was hospitalised six hours earlier (around 17:00) after being struck on the head by 29-year-old Tugay, whom Bangkok Post describes as a Turkish citizen, and The Phuket News – a Swedish citizen. "According to initial investigation findings, the suspect, known as Tugay, was riding a motorcycle with Phuket licence plates down the street. Passing the victim, he sounded his horn, which sparked a verbal argument. During the further conflict, the suspect struck the victim once in the face with his right hand, causing him to fall to the ground, hit his head and lose consciousness," Bangkok Post recounts the events. The incident occurred on Prachanukhro Rd. The newspaper writes that the victim was taken to the hospital by "eyewitnesses." The publication does not explain why these eyewitnesses did not consider it necessary to call for emergency assistance at the scene of the event. The Phuket News clarifies that, having sent the victim into a fatal knockout, the suspect left the scene on a large-capacity Honda X-ADV 750 scooter in black. The man was tracked through CCTV cameras and arrested at 4:00 am on February 26. The Phuket News indicates the place of arrest as "a condominium in Kato." Bangkok Post does not specify where the suspect resided. In The Phuket News publication, it is stated that "the police at the time of the article preparation did not confirm a specific list of charges against the suspect." In the Bangkok Post text, it is stated that charges were brought for physical violence that led to the death of a person. The newspaper adds that the man has already "appeared before the Phuket Provincial Court" and the police have petitioned for bail to be denied. However, the court's verdict on the measure of restraint is not cited by the publication. Neither of the newspapers indicates that the conflict (including the fatal head blow) occurred in front of CCTV cameras, and on available social media frames Thai Rath, a certain woman is visible, allegedly trying to stop the quarrel. A Thai publication Thairath on February 26 reported the suspect's name as Pectus Tukuy Taiar and stated that he is a Swedish citizen. The publication claims that he did not punch the Australian, but instead "punched him to death."
